RWA: Real-World Assets

Bringing traditional value on-chain: treasuries, real estate, private credit and commodities.

RWA platforms tokenize assets that already exist in the traditional financial system, treasury bonds, real estate, private credit, commodities, and represent them as on-chain tokens. Once tokenized, these assets gain the properties blockchain infrastructure is built for: instant settlement, fractional ownership, transparent record-keeping, and usability as collateral across other DeFi protocols.

Where the category stands today

Tokenized real-world assets reached $27.65 billion in total on-chain value by April 2026, led by U.S. Treasury debt at $12.78 billion, roughly half the market, followed by tokenized commodities at $5.4 billion. The sector has grown roughly tenfold since 2022, and institutional participants, including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and Fidelity, are now active issuers rather than observers. Longer-term forecasts from BCG and Ripple project the addressable market moving into the trillions of dollars by the early 2030s.

Market figures are drawn from public reporting current as of early-to-mid 2026 (sources include DefiLlama, CoinGecko, The Block, Dune Analytics, Gartner, and industry market-research reports). These move quickly, verify and refresh before relying on them.

What it takes to build well

Execution, not novelty, wins retention

RWA platforms sit at the intersection of two disciplines that rarely overlap: on-chain engineering and traditional financial compliance. Getting this category right requires custody structures, legal wrappers, and settlement logic that satisfy institutional standards, alongside smart contract architecture built to the same security bar as any other on-chain financial product.

Every improvement in regulatory clarity and custody infrastructure removes another reason for traditional capital to stay off-chain. Given that RWA is competing against trillions of dollars currently sitting in illiquid, paperwork-heavy asset classes, we consider this one of the highest-ceiling categories in on-chain finance over the next several years.
