Lending

Programmable credit markets, open to anyone, with algorithmic rates and liquidations.

On-chain lending replaces a bank’s credit department with a smart contract. Borrowers post crypto collateral and draw a loan against it, lenders deposit assets and earn yield, and interest rates, collateral ratios, and liquidations are handled algorithmically and transparently, visible to anyone who wants to verify the math.

Where the category stands today

Lending has consistently ranked among the two or three largest categories in DeFi by total value locked, with combined deposits across leading protocols regularly in the tens of billions of dollars. It remains foundational infrastructure: DEXs, derivatives platforms, and RWA products all interact with lending markets somewhere in their stack, whether for leverage, collateral efficiency, or yield.

Market figures are drawn from public reporting current as of early-to-mid 2026 (sources include DefiLlama, CoinGecko, The Block, Dune Analytics, Gartner, and industry market-research reports). These move quickly, verify and refresh before relying on them.

What it takes to build well

Execution, not novelty, wins retention

The category is won or lost on risk engine design: accurate collateral pricing, liquidation mechanisms that execute reliably under volatility, and interest rate models that keep pools solvent without starving borrowers of liquidity. A lending protocol with weak liquidation logic is a protocol one bad market day away from insolvency.

The next wave of growth is coming from smarter credit: under-collateralized lending, on-chain credit scoring, and RWA-backed collateral, all of which expand who can borrow and against what. That shift moves the category beyond crypto-collateralized loans for crypto traders and toward genuinely programmable credit markets.
