Derivatives

Leverage, hedging and price exposure, built on-chain and settled by smart contracts.

Derivatives let traders take a position on an asset’s price without holding the asset itself, through perpetual futures, options, and structured products, all settled by smart contracts instead of a centralized clearinghouse. The category exists to serve the same core needs derivatives have always served in traditional markets: leverage, hedging, and efficient price exposure.

Market growth

Where the category stands today

On-chain derivatives are among the fastest-growing segments in digital assets. Total perpetual futures volume across the market grew 75% in two years, from $4.14 trillion in January 2024 to $7.24 trillion in January 2026. Within that growth, decentralized platforms expanded fastest of all: perp DEX volume surged eightfold, from $81.7 billion to $739.5 billion, over the same period, pushing decentralized platforms’ share of total perpetuals volume from 2.0% to 10.2%.

Market figures are drawn from public reporting current as of early-to-mid 2026 (sources include DefiLlama, CoinGecko, The Block, Dune Analytics, Gartner, and industry market-research reports). These move quickly, verify and refresh before relying on them.

What it takes to build well

Execution, not novelty, wins retention

Performance in this category is determined by infrastructure most users never see directly: matching engine throughput, funding rate mechanisms that keep perpetual prices anchored to spot, oracle reliability, and liquidation logic that behaves correctly the instant volatility spikes. A platform’s technical execution here, not its marketing, determines whether it holds up during a genuine market shock.

As on-chain risk infrastructure continues to mature, we expect derivatives platforms to expand further into structured products, on-chain options with real liquidity, and margin systems approaching institutional standards. This is a category we build for with security-first engineering, given how directly downtime or a liquidation failure can translate into real financial loss.
